Understanding Autism

Learn what autism means, how children experience the world differently, and how to focus on strengths alongside support needs.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts, and experiences the world. At Spectrum Hearts, we believe autism is not a limitation — it is a different way of experiencing life.

Every child has unique strengths, talents, and possibilities. Understanding your child's profile helps you advocate effectively, set realistic goals, and celebrate progress at their own pace.

  • Learn your child's sensory preferences — what calms and what overwhelms
  • Focus on strengths and interests as bridges to learning
  • Connect with other parents through workshops and support groups
  • Work closely with therapists to understand assessment findings
  • Remember: progress is measured in small, meaningful steps

Daily Routines

Build predictable, calming routines that help children feel secure and families manage the day with less stress.

Children with autism often thrive on predictability. Consistent daily routines reduce anxiety, support transitions, and make it easier for children to know what comes next.

Visual schedules, timers, and clear step-by-step cues can transform challenging mornings, mealtimes, and bedtimes into calmer experiences for the whole family.

  • Use visual schedules with pictures or icons for each part of the day
  • Prepare your child before transitions with a warning ("two more minutes")
  • Keep morning and bedtime routines as consistent as possible
  • Break tasks into small, achievable steps
  • Celebrate completion of each step — every win matters

Communication Strategies

Support your child's communication at home — whether they use words, gestures, or alternative methods.

Communication looks different for every child. Some children use spoken language; others benefit from visual supports, sign language, or augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools.

Speech therapists at Spectrum Hearts work with families to extend communication strategies into daily home life — because the best progress happens when therapy continues beyond the centre.

  • Model simple language and give your child time to respond
  • Use visual cards or picture boards for requests and choices
  • Follow your child's lead — join their interests to build connection
  • Reduce background noise and distractions during communication practice
  • Ask your speech therapist for home activity ideas each session

Behaviour Management

Positive behaviour support strategies that address underlying needs rather than punishing challenging behaviour.

Challenging behaviours often communicate an unmet need — sensory overload, difficulty expressing frustration, or anxiety about change. Positive behaviour support focuses on understanding the "why" behind behaviour and teaching alternatives.

Our behaviour and ABA therapists partner with parents to create practical strategies that work at home, at school, and in the community.

  • Identify triggers — note what happens before challenging behaviour
  • Teach replacement behaviours (e.g. asking for a break instead of leaving)
  • Use positive reinforcement for desired behaviours consistently
  • Create a calm-down space your child can use when overwhelmed
  • Stay consistent across caregivers — share strategies with family members

Home Activities

Play-based activities that reinforce therapy goals and create joyful learning moments at home.

Learning does not stop when therapy sessions end. Simple, play-based activities at home reinforce the skills your child is building at Spectrum Hearts — communication, motor skills, social interaction, and independence.

The best home activities follow your child's interests. When children enjoy an activity, they engage longer and learn more naturally.

  • Turn daily tasks into learning — sorting laundry, setting the table, watering plants
  • Use play dough, puzzles, and building blocks for fine motor practice
  • Read together daily — point to pictures and ask simple questions
  • Practice turn-taking through simple games
  • Ask therapists which activities match your child's current goals

Nutrition

Practical guidance on mealtimes, food preferences, and healthy eating for children with sensory and developmental needs.

Many children with autism have specific food preferences, sensory sensitivities around texture and taste, or difficulty with mealtimes. These challenges are common and can be addressed with patience and structured approaches.

While Spectrum Hearts does not provide medical nutrition advice, our team can help connect families with appropriate specialists and share general strategies for calmer mealtimes.

  • Introduce new foods gradually alongside familiar favourites
  • Keep mealtimes calm — reduce pressure to try new foods
  • Respect sensory sensitivities around texture, smell, and temperature
  • Establish a regular meal and snack schedule
  • Consult a paediatrician or nutritionist for specific dietary concerns

Government Schemes

An overview of support schemes and rights available to families of children with disabilities in India.

Families of children with autism and developmental disabilities may be eligible for government support including disability certificates, educational concessions, financial assistance, and access to public services.

Requirements and schemes vary by state. Our team can guide enrolled families on documentation and referral pathways. This section provides a general overview — always verify current eligibility with official sources.

  • Apply for a disability certificate (UDID) through your district medical board
  • Explore Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act (RPwD) provisions for education and employment
  • Check Kerala state schemes for persons with disabilities via social justice department portals
  • Keep medical and assessment records organised for scheme applications
